In the era of Donald Trump, USA-Mexico could not have been an ordinary match. Football has expressed its will by endorsing unity between two nations that the new president would like to separate by a massive wall. Thus, the answer to division was unity. Prior to the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier, the two nations wanted to send a strong signal: we are like you, and you are like us. By coming together and embracing each other, the two teams sent a message which goes beyond the ordinary. Football is capable of sending out strong messages, and this was a great example of that.
